I've been hearing the stories of the the Kamalo run from my friends who do the Maui to Molokai crossing. Most everyone agrees that it's the best part of the race. So I was stoked to learn from Jeremy that you guy's were organizing a race and I didn't have to paddle over from Maui to do the best part...ha.

Well let me just say first off how friendly and accommodating everyone was and what a joy it was hooking up with our new friends on Molokai. Todd and his crew from Molokai Ohana Surf Club made the whole process of transporting gear and boards from the ferry to the hotel to the start of the race to the travel back to the ferry easy... with no hassle's at all.

I was surprised more people from Maui didn't make the trip. It was super easy and fun. We had traveling from Maui, Jack, Sharon, Brad, Shaun, Jeremy and myself. I don't think anyone else from the other islands made it over. I could be wrong and I hope some will correct me if I am.

Now the run.... This was by far the best race conditions I've ever had. I've done a lot of smoking Maliko runs, but never on race day. The start was excellent, The best and fairest start I've ever done. We all lined up in about knee high water, standing next to our boards facing directly downwind. Someone yelled 10 seconds, a horn blew and we were off!!

The glides started immediately, the further outside I went the bigger the glides. Plenty of shoulder high bumps that line up so sweet and beg to be ridden right into the next one. I spent quit a bit of time on the tail of my F16 just surfing. Me and my new friend Clint from Molokai riding a Vortice shared some really fun glides together, passing each other back and forth....yeeeehaaaaa!!!! Sooooooooo Fun......

Jeremy and Jack were well ahead along with a Molokai paddler Asa on a 16 footer no rudder board.
The glides were so consistent for the entire run, it was just a joy to be there to experience the first ever Kamalo race, with all these friendly, stoked fellow paddlers on what I think is the premiere coast run in Hawaii.

The only bummer was Jeremy and I had to make it back for the 4:00 ferry, so we had about an hour after hitting the beach to load it all up and get to the harbor. Sure would have liked to hang out with the crew after and talk story. Lot's smiling faces at the finish and everyone stoked with the race.

Anyone who likes to surf down the coast has got to do this run, stay at the hotel, it is right at the end of the run, you paddle to the beach and walk right to the hotel property....sweet. Spend a few days enjoy Molokai.... guaranteed good times.

Can't wait for the 2nd annual Holokai Molokai race!!

Mahalo to all of my Molokai friends,
please come to Maui sometime and paddle the Maliko with us.

Randy Royse

http://molokai.spruz.com/blog.htm?a=&nid=2BF9696E-D9F5-4A32-86D4-F06FAC34544A

http://molokai.spruz.com/blog.htm?a=&nid=2BF9696E-D9F5-4A32-86D4-F06FAC34544A
